Back To The Future - Part 1

Genesis 1:1 - 2:4

Genesis

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was empty, a formless mass cloaked in darkness.  And the Spirit of God was hovering over its surface.  Then God said, " Let there be light," and there was light.  And God saw that it was good.  Then he separated the light from the darkness.  God called the light "day" and the darkness "night."  Together these made up one day.

And God said, "Let there be space between the waters to separate water from water."  And so it was.  God made this space to separate the waters above from the waters below.  And God called the space "sky."  This happened on the second day. 

And God said, "Let the waters beneath the sky be gathered into one place so dry ground may appear."  And so it was.  God named the dry ground "land" and the water "seas."  And God saw that it was good.  Then God said, "Let the land burst forth with every sort of grass and seed-bearing plant.  And let there be trees that grow seed bearing fruit.  The seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came."  And so it was.  The land was filled with seed-bearing plants and trees, and their seeds produced plants and trees of like kind.  And God saw that it was good.  This all happened on the third day.

And God said,  "Let bright lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night.  They will be signs to mark off the seasons, the days and the years.  Let their light shine down upon the earth."  And so it was.  For God made two great lights, the sun and the moon, to shine down upon the earth.  The greater one, the sun, presides during the day, the lesser one, the moon, presides through the night.  He also made the stars.  God set these lights in the heavens to light the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness.  And God saw that it was good.  This all happened on the fourth day.

And God said,  "Let the waters swarm with fish and other life.  Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.  So God created great sea creatures and every sort of fish and every kind of bird.  And God blessed them, saying, "Let the fish multiply and fill the oceans.  Let the birds increase and fill the earth."  This all happened on the fifth day.

And God said, "Let the earth bring forth every kind of animal - livestock, small animals, and wildlife."  And so it was.  God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to reproduce more of its own kind.  And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, "Let us make people in our image, to be like ourselves.  They will be masters over all life - the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the livestock, wild animals, and small animals." 

So God created people in his own image:  God patterned them after himself; male and female he created them.

God blessed them and told them, "Multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.  Be masters over the fish and birds and all the animals.  And God said, "Look!  I have given you the seed-bearing plants throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food.  And I have given all the grasses and other green plants to the animals and birds for their food."  And so it was.  Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was excellent in every way.  This all happened on the sixth day. 

So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed.  On the seventh day, having finished his task, God rested from all his work.  And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from his work of creation.

This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth.

 Thoughts....

Last month I started out looking at the "Eve" and 'us' in Genesis as God spoke 'in the beginning'.  And I got a wee bit derailed.  But that's okay.  Journeys with God are always okay.  And I ended the month with scatterings.  Here I break those scatterings down, so they are more easily digested.      

So let's look at some things regarding ''us' now.

Don't ever let it be said it is not good to talk to yourself, God did.  Or did he?  Take Genesis 1:3, "Then God said...."  And in verse 6, "And God said...."  Verse 8, "And God called...."  Who did he call it out to?  Verse 9, "And God said...."  In verse 10, "God named...."  Why was it pertinent to "name" anything if God was alone?  Or was he?

God continues to speak, and in verse 22, God blessed them, saying - pay attention here - "Let the fish multiply and fill the oceans.  Let the birds increase and fill the earth."  Verse 24, God again spoke aloud saying, "Let the earth bring forth every kind of animal - livestock, small animals, and wildlife."  Is it any wonder then how the rock gave forth water, waters parted, and fig trees died?  God spoke.

The very interesting thing here is that it appears he was speaking to the earth, water, trees, and animals.  Was he?  And he blessed them!

In Romans 8:19-23, Paul tells us "For ALL creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are.  Against its will, EVERYTHING on earth was subjected to God's curse.  ALL creation anticipates the day when it will join God's children in glorious freedom from death and decay.  For we know that ALL Creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And even we Christians, although we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, ALSO groan to be released from pain and suffering.  We, TOO, wait anxiously for that day when God will give US our full rights as his children, including the new bodies he has promised us."  

SO, big SO, I find it V E R Y interesting that "we, TOO, wait".  What does this mean?

One, it means God wasn't talking to himself.  Was it Dr. Doolittle who said, talk to the animals?  Ya, well, God did it first it appears.

Two, if we, TOO wait, it means God first made all creation before us for himself.  And subjected it to his curse. WHICH means as we, as humans, have the ability to receive him, and salvation, so does ALL of creation.  AND no, I do NOT take weird drugs. I'm sane  (general consensus of many folks), and, I'm serious.  I know, it's a mind-blowing thought to all of you - the creation thing, and my sanity perhaps, and that animals, etc, have souls, and await salvation.  Read about it.  Embrace it. 

Moving on....who else was God talking to?  Let's go back to Genesis 1:2 "And the Spirit of God was hovering over its [earths] surface."  Was the Spirit of God the 'HOLY Spirit' or was this a preface for God as himself, and what he was about to do....say?

Let Us Pray

God, Jesus, Holy Spirit it seems we are along for the ride of our lives and have much to learn.  Open our hearts and minds to the truth that lies within the pages of YOUR written word that we may know you better, and learn all we need to know to grow into who we need to be for you, and for ourselves, that we may spend all of enternity in your arms of love.  Forgive us our sins, heal us and make us whole.  In Jesus' name I pray to you, dear Heavenly Father, God, by and with the power of the Holy Spirit.  I praise you.  I thank you.  I love you.  Amen.

Jesus' Prayer of Thanksgiving

'The Unforced Rhythms of Grace'

"Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer:  "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth.  You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people.  Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work."

Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly.  "The Father has given me all these things to do and say.  This is a unique Father - Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge.  No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does.  But I'm not keeping it to myself; I'm ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen."
