Believers....Part 1....Prophesying

Acts 13: 1 - 3

Acts 

Among the prophets and teachers of the church at Antioch of Syria were Barnabas, Simeon (called "the black man"), Lucius (from Cyrene), Manaen (the childhood companion of King Herod Antipas), and Saul.  One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "dedicate Baranabas and Saul for the special work I have for them."  So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.

Thoughts....

Who are you?  What are your gifts?  Has the Holy Spirit made you a prophet?  Then prophesy to build up the church.

1 Corinthians 14:3-4 reads, 'But one who prophesies is helping others grow in the Lord encouraging and comforting them.'   '....one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.'  Paul goes on to say, 'I wish you were all able to prophesy.' 

In 1 Corinthians 15:5, Paul also says prophesying is a greater and more useful gift than speaking in tongues, but he does wish all had the gift of speaking in tongues.  In verse 6 he goes on to say, 'But if I bring you some revelation or some special knowledge or some prophecy or some teaching - that is what will help you.' 

And, in verses 22, 24, 25 he goes on to say, Prophecy is for the benefit of believers, not unbelievers (v22).  'If all of you are prophesying, and unbelievers or people who don't understand these things come into your meeting, they will be convicted of sin, and they will be condemned by what you say (v 24).  As they listen, their secret thoughts will be laid bare, and they will fall down on their knees and worship God, declaring, "God is really here among you."'  He closes his thoughts on prophesying in verse 39 stating, 'So dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy."

  Let Us Pray

God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, please come into my life in a big way today....and always.  I seek to obey you, and receive all the gifts you have to give me to further your work in the Kingdom of God.  You clearly tell us we should desire the special abilities Holy Spirit gives, especially the gift of prophecy.  So be it.  I bow down to you and open myself fully to you. ONLY you, though.  Please insure that Satan never has opportunity to enter what is yours and yours alone.  Fill me to overflowing, so that he can never enter me: my heart, mind, body, spirit, soul, again.  I pray to be all you need me, to be to go forth in all the ways you need me to go forth, especially I am eager to receive, have enhanced, the gift from Holy Spirit, to prophesy.  I pray to fulfill my part in helping others know who you are, that you are, and how wonderful you are in the Kingdom of God.  It is your will, the path, the journey for every Christian to achieve this.  Thank you for always being there for me, even during those times I have not been as attentive, devotional, appearing to be loving, towards you.  Know that I've loved you always, even when I have not shown it, however, you clearly tell us we must show you for you to know we truly are yours. Forgive me please, for the moments I have not been at my best.  And thank you.  For everything you've done and are going to do in my life.  And for allowing me the privilege of going forth in your name.  I praise you!  I thank you! I love you!  Amen.

Let us hear from Paul as he prays:  

When I think of the wisdom and scope of God's plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.  I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit.  And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him.  May your roots go down deep into the soil of God's marvelous love.  And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is.  May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it.  Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Now glory be to God!  By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope.  May he be given glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever through endless ages.  Amen.  Ephesians 3:14-21 NLT

  Our Continual Cause

It is time to reach into the community and the world around you to see wherein lies the greatest need.  As you choose to focus on these areas, do so with a servant's heart.  Whether the need is for children, adults, animals, the earth, or any cause in between that will help those in need, ask God how you can best serve his needs, what path you must take, and how long you should persevere.  Sometimes we are to be in the lives of others merely as stepping stones.  Sometimes we are to touch those lives forever.  Whatever journey you are called to take, whatever team you will be a member, know this:  God is with you always...even til the end of time.  He loves you, is grateful for you, and will help you along life's way, especially if you are helping others along theirs, persevering with a servant's heart.

'The Unforced Rhythms of Grace'

"Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer:  "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth.  You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people.  Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work."

Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly.  "The Father has given me all these things to do and say.  This is a unique Father - Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge.  No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does.  But I'm not keeping it to myself; I'm ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen."

 I now write most prayers in the position of ' I ' (first person) because most people are sitting at their computer alone, not in groups, and it allows those reading and praying to personalize the prayer as coming from them going to God.  Variations may appear on holidays when families may wish to use the prayer provided.  I encourage you to pray your own prayers as well.
