 Weeping With the Tree of Life  

Luke 23: 26 - 31

Luke

As they led Jesus away, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country just then, was forced to follow Jesus and carry his cross.  Great crowds trailed along behind, including many grief-stricken women.  But Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.  For the days are coming when they will say, 'Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child, and the breasts that have never nursed.'  People will beg the mountains to fall on them and the hills to bury them.  For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

 Thoughts....

The Tree of Life stands before the people..  He has been beaten, flogged, spit on, called names, sent to be nailed on a cross to die...for doing nothing wrong.  He is alive in this scene....like a tree with growths of green.  Yet when the Tree is dry, when he dies, will there be "one child left in this world to carry on....to carry on"? 

The people turn to him while he is alive, they follow him, worship him, obey him.  They mourn what is about to happen to him.  Yet he mourns what will happen to them.  He reminds them to continue their love for him, their devotion, respect, honor, and to obey him even in death.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Jesus went ahead of you to prepare a place for you.  You no longer have to weep and gnash your teeth.  Now you can rejoice (!) because of what Jesus did for you.  Jesus suffered and died on a cross, so you don't have to.  HIS death concluded in resurrection to a new life.  Just like yours can. 

This very moment, God is waiting to hear from you.  NOT in death....in the choice for a new life.  Will you disappoint him yet again? 

Run to his arms, if you will.  It is only in his arms that you will be safe.  It is only in God's arms you will experience eternity.

Choose this day whom you will serve!  Choose Jesus of Nazareth to be your Savior and make him Lord of your life!

 Let Us Pray

God, I get it now!  I get what Jesus was saying, how important it is that I stay focused on him and his plans for my life.  I realize I am to keep him alive in my heart, so that I may have everlasting life.  So that I can be with him in paradise....Heaven !  Praise you God for making bad turn into good, for being gracious, loving, and merciful!  I just praise you and thank you!  I love you.  Amen.

Let us hear from Paul as he prays:  

When I think of the wisdom and scope of God's plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.  I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit.  And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him.  May your roots go down deep into the soil of God's marvelous love.  And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is.  May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it.  Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Now glory be to God!  By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope.  May he be given glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever through endless ages.  Amen.  Ephesians 3:14-21 NLT

  Our Continual Cause

It is time to reach into the community and the world around you to see wherein lies the greatest need.  As you choose to focus on these areas, do so with a servant's heart.  Whether the need is for children, adults, or animals, or any cause in between that will help those in need, ask God how you can best serve his needs, what path you must take, and how long you should persevere.  Sometimes we are to be in the lives of others merely as stepping stones.  Sometimes we are to touch those lives forever.  Whatever journey you are called to take, whatever team you will be a member, know this:  God is with you always...even til the end of time.  He loves you, is grateful for you, and will help you along life's way, especially if you are helping others along theirs, persevering with a servant's heart.

"Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer:  "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth.  You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people.  Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work."

Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly.  "The Father has given me all these things to do and say.  This is a unique Father - Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge.  No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does.  But I'm not keeping it to myself; I'm ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen."
