About Money, Being A True Christian, & More

Luke 16: 1 - 18

Luke

Jesus told this story to his disciples:  "A rich man hired a manager to handle his affairs, but soon a rumor went around that the manager was thoroughly dishonest.  So his employer called him in and said, 'What's this I hear about your stealing from me?  Get your report in order because you are going to be dismissed.'

"The manager thought to himself, 'Now what?  I'm through here, and I don't have the strength to go out and dig ditches, and I'm too proud to beg.  I know just the thing!  And then I'll have plenty of friends to take care of me when I leave!

"So he invited each person who owed money to his employer to come and discuss the situation.  He asked the first one, 'How much do you owe him?'  The man replied, "I owe him eight hundred gallons of olive oil.'  so the manager told him, 'Tear up that bill and write another one for four hundred gallons.'

"'And how much do you owe my employer?' he asked the next man.  'A thousand bushels of wheat.' was the reply.  'Here,' the manager said,' take your bill and replace it with one for only eight hundred bushels.'

"The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd.  And it is true that the citizens of this world are more shrewd than the godly are.  I tell you, use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends.  In this way, your generosity stores up a reward for you in heaven.

"Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones.  If you cheat even a little, you won't be honest with greater responsibilities.  And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?  And if you are not faithful with other people's money, why should you be trusted with money of your own?

"No one can serve two masters.  For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other.  You cannot serve both God and money."

The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, naturally scoffed at all this.  Then he said to them, "You like to look good in public, but God knows your evil hearts.  What this world honors is an abomination in the sight of God.

"Until John the Baptist began to preach, the laws of Moses and the messages of the prophets were your guides.  But now the Good News of the Kingdom of God is preached, and eager multitudes are forcing their way in.  But that doesn't mean that the law has lost its force in even the smallest point.  It is stronger and more permanent than heaven and earth.

"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."

Thoughts.....

Lots of ground to cover today, so let's get started.

"A rich man hired a manager to handle his affairs, but soon a rumor went around that the manager was thoroughly dishonest.  NOT GOOD.  So his employer called him in and said, 'What's this I hear about your stealing from me?  Get your report in order because you are going to be dismissed.  OUCH.  DISHONESTY DOES NOT PAY.

"The manager thought to himself, 'Now what?  I'm through here, and I don't have the strength to go out and dig ditches, and I'm too proud to beg.  I know just the thing!  And then I'll have plenty of friends to take care of me when I leave!'  UH-OH.

"So he invited each person who owed money to his employer to come and discuss the situation.  He asked the first one, 'How much do you owe him?'  The man replied, 'I owe him eight hundred gallons of olive oil.'  So the manager told him, 'Tear up that bill and write another one for four hundred gallons.'  YIKES.  SO HOW IS THIS BEING HONEST AND GOOD AND TRUE AND TRUSTWORTHY, ETC.?  NOT ONLY IS THIS MANIPULATIVE....TRYING TO BUY FRIENDSHIP, BUT IT IS STEALING FROM THE EMPLOYER IN THE SENSE HE IS NOT GOING TO GET ALL THE MONEY OWED TO HIM.

"'And how much do you owe my employer?' he asked the next man.  'A thousand bushels of wheat,' was the reply.  'Here, the manager said, 'take your bill and replace it with one for only eight hundred bushels.'  OH NO.  HE'S GETTING DEEPER INTO DIRT(Y).

"The rich man had to [?] admire [?] the dishonest [!] rascal [!] for being so shrewd."

Let's look at the definition of 'shrewd' from dictionaries on the world wide web:

Merriam Webster Dictionary:  archaic, mischievous.  MWD indicates the following are obsolete (probably existed as definitions during the times of biblical history, absolutely did per dictionaries during the time I was growing up) abusive, ominous, dangerous.

Your Dictionary:  Obsolete:  evil, bad, wicked, mischievous, artful, cunning, wily in ones' dealings [with another]; evil, bad. wicked.

Bing:  1.  Good at judging people or situations, showing or possessing intelligence, insight and sound judgment, especially in business, politics.  2.  Clever and probably accurate based on good judgment and probably correct.  3.  Crafty:  inclined to deal with others in a clever under-handed way.

Merriam Webster Thesaurus indicates the following:  having or showing a practical cleverness or judgment.  Synonyms: astute, canny, clear eyed, clear sighted, hard-boiled, hard headed.

I find it VERY interesting to see the way of the world....how time has corrupted definitions.  Shrewd was considered not a good thing, now it is a great thing it appears.  Rereading what the rich man was thinking, his thoughts and Jesus' thoughts make sense with the 'obsolete' meaning of the word 'shrewd'.

Continuing on....let's read that last quote from scripture again:

"The rich man had to [?] admire [?] the dishonest [!] rascal [!] for being so shrewd."  Jesus goes on to say, "And it is true [!] that the citizens of this world are more shrewd than the godly are."  SAD FOR THE CITIZENS, BUT GOOD FOR THE GODLY.  Jesus goes on to say, "I tell you, use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends.  In this way, your generosity stores up a reward for you in heaven."  PLEASE NOTE:  JESUS DID NOT SAY TO DO WHAT THE SHREWD MANAGER DID.  JESUS SHOWED THE GOODNESS OF, AND BLESSINGS IN, GIVING, BUT PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE THIS WITH BEING SHREWD AND/OR DISHONEST, AND/OR LIVING IN THE WAYS OF THE WORLD.

Jesus continues with the following lessons:

"Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones."

"If you cheat even a little, you won't be honest with greater responsibilities."

"And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?"

"And if you are not faithful with other people's money, why should you be trusted with money of your own?"

So, did you take home from the office a paper clip or a handful of them lately?  Pen?  Paper?  Use the computer and electricity for something other than work related business?  Did you over charge on that oil change, or put a small slice in a fan belt to get a customer to return?  How about that little insignificant earring set you snuck out the door only to report it as stolen merchandise?  IT WAS.  Are you cheating your customers on gasoline consumption?  [Does it really pay to pay in advance with cash while the gas pumps trickle out the last drops of gasoline into the hose instead of into a tank, or is debit/credit better, so you can control how much gasoline you actually get?]  Did you eat a grape or two on the way to the oranges....the scale at the register won't know....but God will know it all.

What are your dreams?  Will you live them?  Reread the lessons above by Jesus to decide where you stand with him and God and how they are helping you achieve your dreams....or their dreams for your life.

Jesus goes on to give us more lessons:

"No one can serve two masters.  For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other.  You cannot serve both God and money."

This is hard to balance when, in this day and age, it is paramount for us to earn a living to survive.  But most do not want to survive, or thrive, they want to live exceedingly abundantly OVER their level of prosperity.  Many work 2 jobs just to make ends meet at the bottom rung of the survival ladder.  Some work 2 jobs to make ends meet for expectations and success ratios equaling their neighbors....by all appearances.  EVERY body seems to be in debt for one thing or another.  Everybody seems to need to, but many choose this path.  Needing a car is not the same as needing the best car.  And one cannot say, 'needing the best that money can buy' because money doesn't buy cars for the most part any more, credit does.

In my counseling practice, I find many husbands working 2 jobs at the harassment of the wife so she can have more, even though she, too, is working.  And then she complains that her husband is not spending enough time with her and the kids.  Folks, you can't have it ALL ways.

And that is what Jesus is essentially trying to say.  You can't love money, have it all, be so focused on being successful from a worldly perspective and choose to NOT have a successful relationship with him and God.  You must find balance.  God does not sit in heaven saying you/we must love him to exclusion of everything else in the world.  He wants you to put him FIRST, so he can help you have abundance.  You are working way too hard.  You might be excluding the one who gave you life in the first place so you can enjoy it, and be prosperous.  What can you let go of so you have time for God, Jesus, Holy Spirit?  Do you have to have the largest most fine house?  Can you choose to have a little less, so you can focus more on the Trinity?  On each other?  On your kids?  On pointing others to Jesus so he can save them?

Moving on....

From Scripture:  The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money [Are you one?], naturally scoffed at all this [Are you scoffing?].  Then he [Jesus] said to them, "You like to look good in public, but God knows your evil hearts.  What this world honors is an abomination in the sight of God."

A little stronger than my point.  Again, I don't think for one minute that God wants all of us to live in the desert on bended knees in rags praying 24/7.  Ok, praying 24/7 would be graciously received, but I don't think he prefers we live in rags vs 'rich' garments.  I think he would prefer we clothe ourselves in his [Say 'his'] noble garments, so others can see how much God loves us.  Part of the love is a reward for honoring him and his ways, and most definitely a grateful love for being obedient to him.  If everyone went around in rags, what would be the draw to our Savior or our Creator....besides forgiveness of sin and eternal life, that the world doesn't see right away?  The ways of the world want to see riches.  God knows this.  He will reward us with what we need, and sometimes with what we want, to help our testimony that he saves and gives abundantly.  However, giving abundantly and giving life abundantly are two different things.  OHHHHH.

Let me say that again:  Giving abundantly and giving life abundantly are two different things.  Which would you prefer?  You have a choice between streaks in your hair, or life.  Diamond studded fingernails, or life.  Hot rod tires and painted emblems on your car, or life.  Earrings that disfigure your earlobes, or life.  Pants falling off to entice which merely disgust, or life.  A grand home with the finest things within, no time for others around you including God, or life.  The latest speed boat to spend all your weekends on the lake and snowboarding in the winter, or life.  You get my point.  You probably got it a few sentences ago.

Abomination in the sight of God is not the basics, or even fine, nice things.  Abomination is excluding him to everything else to have everything else.  Abomination is disfiguring the temple of God.  Abomination is denying him, not spending time with him, not thanking him for what you do have.  Keep in mind that if HE didn't give it to you, if you got it on your own steam, it was prompted from Satan.  You see, you are either for God or not.  You are either hot or cold.  Warm doesn't last very long.  You are either a child of God or of Satan.  If you are a child of God, you spend time worshiping him and obeying him.  Not just showing up at church, if you do.  REALLY worshiping him, being concerned about his....HIS....every day wants and needs.  Have you ever asked him what help he needs 'down here', what you can do for him....to please him/make him happy....to help others for him?  Have you asked him into your heart, your life?  He so wants to be there for and with you, to see your dreams come true, and have the desires of your heart met.  But he needs things from you, too.  He needs to know you care, that you want to get to know him, that you love him as much as he loves you.  [So does your spouse.]  God's given you life, and Jesus has laid his life down for you. [And your spouse.]  He died on a cross for you....to give you eternal life.  The least you can do is say hi every so often.  A little thank you wouldn't hurt either.

Back to Scripture:  "Until John the Baptist began to preach, the laws of Moses and the messages of the prophets were your guides.  But now the Good News of the Kingdom of God is preached, and eager multitudes are forcing their way in."  [DID YOU JUST READ THE PART ABOUT 'EAGER MULTITUDES FORCING THEIR WAY IN'?  ARE YOU EAGERLY FORCING YOUR WAY IN TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD?]

Following on...."But that doesn't mean that the law has lost its force in even the smallest point.  It is stronger and more permanent than heaven and earth",  Jesus says.  Strong words.  Recently I learned that there is a professed Christian who does not believe in the Old Testament.  The Old Testament is necessary for us to see the value in the the New Testament....in the need for Jesus' life and resurrection....the Messiah come....THE Savior for the world arrived....the Kingdom of God being here....NOW.  The Old Testament is as rich in its documented history and significance as the New Testament.  There are some that say that since we don't have any texts of such that it didn't exist and it is just stories handed down.  So what?  How else have we learned about history besides written texts?  The stories told.  Archeology is one.  Hieroglyphics another.  ETC.  And there ARE documents of stories handed down.  Look at what we've found in the world to back up the New Testament documents, some we still have, others having been destroyed, as I mentioned last week.  And does it matter if we have it in 'black and white' or the 'glory story' is shared?  Is Jesus not speaking to your heart?  If not, ask him to do so.  Ask God, too.  And Holy Spirit.

By holding onto this commandment:  "Love the Lord with all your heart, your soul, your mind, your strength  and love your neighbor as yourself"  the rest of the commandments will be upheld, because you will not want to injure God emotionally by hurting him or those he loves....or yourself....by choosing a path contrary to meeting him at heavens gates.  That would be a 'permanent force'.  In this case, 'May the force NOT be with you'.  Ha ha.

And the last paragraph is about divorce and adultery.  Picture Jesus standing in a crowd fielding questions constantly.  This is merely a quick response to the last question tossed:  "Anyone who divorces his wife, and marries someone else commits adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."  Interesting to note that most folks doing this don't give a heartbeat of thought, nor care, nor are they concerned with whether they are committing adultery or not.  They know and do not care anyway.  They are NOT TRUE CHRISTIANS.  Another recent story was about a husband on a church leadership council beating his Christian wife and having affairs.  Everyone praised his efforts in the church and thought the world of him.  No one knew.  No one ever wants to know.  But I will say this:  IT is of PARAMOUNT importance that we follow Scripture about this.  One bad apple in this bunch CAN spoil the whole basket.  If the offender won't listen to the offended party, take someone else to try and get them to hear.  If that doesn't work, take them to the Pastor, Priest or Minister.  If that doesn't work, throw them out of the church.

If you remember the story about the woman at the well, Jesus knew she had many husbands.  She'd had sex with many men.  In days of old, that constituted marriage.  How many folks have you been married to?  Take some time to ask God to forgive you and then ask him to break all those areas of bondage in your life that keep you from being one with him.  Now I'm not talking about your present marital relationship, if you are in one.  I'm talking about all the 'Star Trek' ones....the ones that have 'gone on before'.  Isn't that from Star Trek?  You get the point, I'm sure, anyway.  IF you married as a practicing Christian, God is in your midst and you are a three braided cord.  That does not mean your marriage is perfect, it means it has a better chance at being great.  IF you are now a Christian and your spouse is, too, perhaps you might consider inviting God, Jesus, Holy Spirit into your midst to become one with them.  Let them have first choice in decisions and loving.  If you are not a Christian yet, nor is your spouse, consider asking God into your heart and then share your newly found forgiveness and love with your spouse so they might join you as one with the Trinity.  If one in the marriage is Christian and the other is not, you've a tough road to hoe.  Lots of painful decisions will come around the bend.  Yours is not an easy task for the future, but since you are reading this, there is hope that you or your spouse may learn of forgiveness and the love of God, Jesus and Holy Spirit.

Whatever path you are on know this:  God created you and loves you, Jesus loved you enough to die for you giving you the opportunity to enter Heaven, and Holy Spirit wants to love you, if you will let him.  You can be forgiven of your sins.  IF....BIG IF....you do not have a reprobate mind. Someone that has a reprobate mind is someone who has known God, has chosen to flippantly disobey and dishonor God, knowing full well they are not pleasing God or obeying him, and, who chooses to continue, obsessively, on the path that leads to hell not righteousness.  They will not be forgiven, or enter heaven.  They will be cut off.  See John 15:6 for a start on this topic.

As you read todays lesson, please know that the large capitalized letters are not me 'yelling at you', as can be construed in computer language.  They are merely me making emphasis.  Which you can see, I stopped for the most part, only because it made me crazy to type that way.  I pray you got the message without a negative filter, but one of an educational focus.

The bottom line that the Lord needs to convey today is to be very careful about how you live your life.  You can make good choices, great choices, and choices that do not lead to heaven.  Essentially, in reverse, don't commit adultery, BE EAGER to become a Christian....run to his arms.  Don't worry about pleasing the world, please God instead.  Be faithful, honest and trustworthy in small matters, and with other people's money, so you can be trusted and can be responsible with money for yourself, and in larger areas....like the true riches of heaven.  Use your worldly resources to help others for it stores up a reward for you in heaven.  Don't be dishonest, be a rascal, or be shrewd.  Don't owe anyone anything.  Make friends who are true Christians.  Note:  Just because they talk, doesn't mean they walk.  Rough reminder for me this last week.  Don't be dishonest, cheat, or steal.  And most importantly overall, love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, your mind, your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.  You can also apply what is called 'The Golden Rule':  "Do for others what you would like them to do for you.  This is a summary of all this is taught in the law and the prophets."  Jesus spoke these words and Matthew noted them.  They can be found in Matthew 7:12.

In a book that I read long ago, and from which I've shared before, I will always recall the last page.  Forgive me, I do not recall the title or the author, but the phrase I share from my heart to yours is:  "As you reach out to touch, may the world never hurt you."

Let Us Pray

Gee, Lord.  Lots to think about today.  I've thought I've put you first, but I can honestly look at my life and see that I've been cheating you out of my life and love.  Just because I've been trying to do things 'right', hasn't meant that I have actually been doing things your way, or in obedience.  Sometimes I move forward without hearing from you because I need to do something 'right then'.  I figure you trust me to make a decision or you would have told me what to do, how to do, and where to do, etc.  Maybe not.  I can see Satan's influence in my life.  I pray you will forgive me of my sins AND break any bondage or yokes that may be hindering me from growing, doing for you, or, are downright getting in the way of loving you, receiving your love, being one with you. I guess 'little things mean a lot' has lots of meaning in every day life if I am walking with you.  I do choose to walk with you and be one with you.  I want you fully in my life, my heart, my mind, my soul, my strength.   I choose to love my neighbor as myself.  Ok....for the most part.  I'm way not perfect, sorry.  I guess you'd better help me in this area, so you do not perceive me as having a reprobate mind.  I want to be all I can be for you....and for me, and those around me.  I want to be successful, but first at loving you.  Then in life, but not to the exclusion of you, or in opposition to your ways.  Lord God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, please do not ever leave me or let me go.  I am nothing without you.  As Josh Groben sings, "You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains.....You raise me up to be more than I can be."  Thank you.  I am very grateful for your love and presence in my life, your forgiveness, your saving grace, the opportunity to go to Heaven, if I just obey you.  Help me Father God, Jesus, Holy Spirit.  Help me.  Thank you.  Continue your work in me that I may bring you glory.  Continue your work in me that I may see you and my loved ones in Heaven one day.  But not too soon, okay?  I still have lots of work to do here for you, and loved ones who need me here for now.  You are taking care of my loved ones in Heaven for which I am eternally grateful.  Thank you.  I love you.  Amen.

Let us hear from Paul as he prays:

When I think of the wisdom and scope of God's plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.  I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit.  And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him.  May your roots go down deep into the soil of God's marvelous love.  And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is.  May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it.  Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Now glory be to God!  By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope.  May he be given glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever through endless ages.  Amen.  Ephesians 3:14-21 NLT

  Our Current Cause

It is time to reach into the community and the world around you to see wherein lies the greatest need.  As you choose to focus on these areas, do so with a servant's heart.  Whether the need is for children, adults, or animals, or any cause in between that will help those in need, ask God how you can best serve his needs, what path you must take, and how long you should persevere.  Sometimes we are to be in the lives of others merely as stepping stones.  Sometimes we are to touch those lives forever.  Whatever journey you are called to take, whatever team you will be a member, know this:  God is with you always...even til the end of time.  He loves you, is grateful for you, and will help you along life's way, especially if you are helping others along theirs, persevering with a servant's heart.

Please accept my sincerest thanks....and God's....and may God richly bless you!

 Jesus' Prayer of Thanksgiving

'The Unforced Rhythms of Grace'

"Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer:  "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth.  You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people.  Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work."

Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly.  "The Father has given me all these things to do and say.  This is a unique Father - Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge.  No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does.  But I'm not keeping it to myself; I'm ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen."

"Are you tired?  Worn out?  Burned out on religion?  Come to me.  Get away with me and you'll recover your life.  I'll show you how to take a real rest.  Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it.  Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.  I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn how to live freely and lightly.

   Matthew 11:  25-30

  The Message

And the people said,

"Amen."
